Air Conditioning & Heating

The same system that cools you in July is what clears your windshield in January. Air conditioning removes moisture from the air, so a car with a dead A/C compressor has a defroster that fogs instead of clears — which is why we treat climate control as a year-round safety system, not a summer luxury.

We do not just add refrigerant and send you off. Refrigerant does not get consumed; if the system is low, it leaked, and adding more without finding the leak means paying twice. We test pressures on both sides, check the temperature drop at the vents, and trace leaks with dye or an electronic detector before recommending a repair.

What this service covers

  • A/C performance test with high and low side pressures and vent temperatures
  • Leak detection using UV dye or electronic sniffer
  • Evacuate and recharge to the manufacturer's exact refrigerant charge
  • Compressor, condenser, evaporator and expansion valve replacement
  • Cabin air filter replacement
  • Heater core, blend door and blower motor diagnosis
  • Defrost and defog performance diagnosis

Signs it is time to book

  • Air from the vents is cool rather than cold, or cold only while moving
  • The A/C compressor cycles rapidly on and off
  • A musty smell when you first turn on the fan
  • The windshield fogs and will not clear quickly in the cold
  • Weak airflow on every fan setting
  • No heat, or heat only on one side of the car

Every job starts with an inspection and a written estimate. Nothing gets done without your approval — call (705) 748-4223 or drop the vehicle at 485 Parkhill Rd E, Peterborough, Ontario K9L 1C2.

Air Conditioning & Heating — the questions we get asked most

Why does my A/C only blow cold when the car is moving?
That usually points at condenser airflow — a failed cooling fan or a condenser packed with road debris and bugs. At speed the ram air compensates; sitting in traffic on Lansdowne it cannot.
Can you just top up the refrigerant?
We can, but we would be topping up a leak. Refrigerant is a sealed charge that is not consumed in normal operation, so a low system has a leak somewhere. We find it first, then charge to the exact factory weight.
Does my car use R-1234yf or R-134a?
Most vehicles from roughly 2015 onward use R-1234yf; older ones use R-134a. They require different equipment and the refrigerants are not interchangeable. We service both.
Why does my A/C smell musty?
Bacteria and mould growing on the damp evaporator core, usually combined with a saturated cabin air filter. A filter replacement plus an evaporator treatment normally resolves it. Running the fan without A/C for the last minute of a drive helps prevent recurrence.
Should I run the A/C in winter?
Yes — a few minutes a month at minimum. It circulates the lubricating oil that keeps the compressor seals alive, and it is what actually dries the air for your defroster. Most defrost settings engage the compressor automatically for exactly that reason.
My heat only works on the passenger side. What is that?
Typically a failed blend door actuator, which is a small motor behind the dash. It often announces itself with a clicking noise from the centre of the dash before it stops working entirely.
How much does A/C repair cost?
It ranges from an inexpensive O-ring and recharge to a compressor and condenser replacement. We diagnose first and give you a written estimate, so you know which end of that range you are in before committing.
Is it worth fixing A/C on an older car?
In our climate, it is worth more than people assume — it is the defroster's dehumidifier as much as it is summer comfort. That said, if the repair costs more than the car is worth, we will tell you plainly.

I have been very pleased with the service I have received at 4 Aces Automotive Centre. They have solved problems that other facilities were not able to do. The pricing seems fair—certainly comparable to other centres. And they seem very friendly, knowledgable, efficient, and skilled. Once, when they had my car up on the hoist—performing a repair— they detected an additional—and serious—problem. Rather than just telling me what they had found, they took me out into the garage to show me the issue and suggested that I have an auto body expert look at the problem to determine if it could be safely resolved before I had 4 Aces proceed with some additional repairs. I trust their work and they seem to genuinely care about the safety of my vehicle.
