Cold is brutal on batteries. At −18 °C a healthy battery delivers roughly half the cranking amps it makes on a warm July afternoon, while the engine needs more of them because the oil is thick. That arithmetic is why Peterborough shops see a wave of no-starts every January, and why a battery that seemed fine in November suddenly is not.
We test rather than assume. A conductance test on the battery, a charging-system test on the alternator, a voltage-drop test on the cables and grounds, and a parasitic draw test if the car goes flat while parked. Electrical Systems & Batteries — the questions we get asked most
- How long should a car battery last in Peterborough?
- Three to five years is typical here. Our winters shorten battery life at one end and summer heat degrades it at the other. If yours is over three years old, have it tested each fall — the test takes minutes and a January no-start on Parkhill costs a lot more than a battery.
- Why did my battery die with no warning?
- Batteries usually fail suddenly rather than gradually. Internal plate degradation can leave enough capacity to start a warm engine right up until the morning it cannot start a cold one. That is exactly why testing beats waiting for symptoms.
- Is it the battery or the alternator?
- The distinguishing test is what happens after a boost. If the car runs fine once started and then dies again the next morning, suspect the battery or a draw. If it dies while driving or the lights dim at idle, suspect the charging system. We test both rather than replace one and hope.
- Do modern cars need the battery registered after replacement?
- Many do — most European makes and an increasing number of others. The charging system adjusts its strategy to battery age, and skipping registration can overcharge and prematurely kill a new battery. We handle the registration as part of the job.
- What is a parasitic draw?
- Current the vehicle continues to use after it should have gone to sleep — a stuck relay, a glovebox light, an aftermarket dash cam or remote starter wired to a live circuit, or a module that never shuts down. We measure it in milliamps and then isolate it circuit by circuit.
- Can you wire a trailer plug or a brake controller?
- Yes. We do trailer wiring, seven-pin installs and electric brake controller installation and repair — common work in this county with utility, boat and horse trailers all over the back roads.
- My headlights are yellow and dim. Is that a bulb?
- Often it is oxidised polycarbonate lenses rather than the bulbs, which is both an aesthetic and a safety problem on unlit county roads. Restoration or lens replacement usually recovers most of the output.
- Will a block heater help my battery?
- Indirectly, and significantly. A block heater keeps the oil thin so the starter draws less current, which means the battery has to deliver far less on a −25 °C morning. On older vehicles it is one of the best cold-weather investments available.
