Ontario Safety Inspections

If you are transferring ownership of a used vehicle in Ontario, bringing a vehicle in from another province, or re-registering a car that has been off the road, you need a Safety Standards Certificate from a licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection Station. We perform the inspection to the provincial standard and issue the certificate when the vehicle passes.

The certificate is a snapshot of the vehicle's condition on the day of inspection — it is not a warranty and it is not a mechanical fitness opinion. If you want to know whether the car is a good buy rather than whether it is legal to plate, ask for a pre-purchase inspection instead, or both together. In salt country the difference matters: a vehicle can pass safety and still have brake lines that will not survive another winter.

Ontario Safety Inspections — the questions we get asked most

How long is an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate valid?
36 days from the date of inspection for the purposes of registration. It certifies the vehicle met the minimum standard on that date only — it makes no promise about next month.
What fails a safety inspection most often around here?
Corrosion. Perforated brake lines, rotted rocker panels at the jacking points, rusted-through subframe and suspension mounting areas, and seized parking brake cables. Peterborough winters, county gravel and road salt do that, and it is why an eastern Ontario safety is a stricter experience than one out west.
Do you have to fix the vehicle at your shop if it fails?
No. You are free to have the repairs done anywhere or do them yourself, then bring it back for re-inspection. We will hand you the list either way.
Is a safety certificate the same as an emissions test?
No. Ontario ended the Drive Clean emissions programme for light passenger vehicles in 2019. Heavy diesel commercial vehicles still have their own requirements. A safety inspection covers mechanical and structural condition.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a private-sale car?
Always, and before the money moves. An hour on the hoist commonly reveals frame rot, prior collision repair, or a leak that the seller genuinely did not know about. It is the cheapest part of buying a used car.
How long does the inspection take?
Plan on one to two hours for a standard safety. Book ahead — the hoist has to be free for the whole inspection, so walk-ins are hard to accommodate.
I am moving to Peterborough from out of province. What do I need?
An out-of-province vehicle needs a Safety Standards Certificate plus, in some cases, a structural inspection before Ontario will register it. Bring the current registration and we will tell you exactly what applies to your vehicle.
Can you inspect a trailer?
Trailers over a certain weight require their own safety certificate in Ontario. Call us with the trailer's details and we will confirm what is needed before you drive it over.

I have been very pleased with the service I have received at 4 Aces Automotive Centre. They have solved problems that other facilities were not able to do. The pricing seems fair—certainly comparable to other centres. And they seem very friendly, knowledgable, efficient, and skilled. Once, when they had my car up on the hoist—performing a repair— they detected an additional—and serious—problem. Rather than just telling me what they had found, they took me out into the garage to show me the issue and suggested that I have an auto body expert look at the problem to determine if it could be safely resolved before I had 4 Aces proceed with some additional repairs. I trust their work and they seem to genuinely care about the safety of my vehicle.
