Suspension & Steering Repair — the questions we get asked most
- How long do struts last?
- Roughly 120,000 to 160,000 km in general, but on gravel county roads and frost-heaved pavement it can be much less. The tell is the bounce test and the visual: oil weeping down the strut body means the seal is gone.
- I hit a pothole and now the car pulls. What happened?
- Most commonly the alignment has shifted, but a hard enough impact can bend a control arm, crack a wheel, or damage a tire's internal belt. We inspect the corner before aligning, because aligning around a bent part just hides the problem.
- What does a bad wheel bearing sound like?
- A hum or growl that rises with road speed and changes when you swerve gently left and right — loading the bearing makes it louder, unloading it quieter. It is one of the more reliably diagnosable noises on a car.
- Do I need an alignment after suspension work?
- Yes, on any repair that touches a component affecting geometry — control arms, tie rods, struts, ball joints. Skipping it means the new parts start wearing your tires immediately.
- Should I replace shocks in pairs?
- Always across an axle. A new shock on one side and a worn one on the other makes the car handle unevenly under braking and in a swerve, which is exactly when you need it to be predictable.
- My steering feels heavy. Is that the pump?
- On a hydraulic system it could be the pump, fluid level, or a failing rack. On electric power steering it is more often a motor, torque sensor or software fault, which is a scan-tool diagnosis rather than a fluid check.
- Are cheap aftermarket suspension parts a false economy?
- Frequently, yes. Budget ball joints and tie rods in a salt climate can be loose again in two winters, and you pay the labour twice. We will quote both options and tell you honestly where the money is worth spending.
- Can worn suspension fail a safety inspection?
- Yes. Excessive play in ball joints, tie rods or wheel bearings, and leaking or collapsed shocks and struts are all standard failure items on an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate inspection.
