Engine Repair & Tune-Ups
An engine rarely fails without warning — it tells you first, usually through a light, a smell, a sound or a fuel-economy drop you noticed but did not mention. Our job is to read those signals accurately instead of replacing parts and hoping. We scan live data, check fuel trims, test compression when the numbers warrant it, and confirm the fault before quoting the repair.
In Peterborough the seasonal pattern is predictable. Cold October mornings expose weak ignition coils and tired spark plugs. Long idles in winter foul plugs on short-trip city cars. Spring exposes the coolant leaks that the cold had been sealing shut. We see all of it every year, which is why the diagnosis usually starts with a conversation about when the problem shows up, not just what it does.

What this service covers
- Check engine light diagnosis with live data and freeze-frame analysis
- Spark plug, ignition coil and misfire repair
- Timing belt and timing chain component replacement
- Water pump, thermostat and cooling system repair
- Oil leak diagnosis — valve cover, oil pan, rear main and seals
- Fuel injector and fuel delivery service
- Full tune-up: plugs, filters, fluids and a road test
Signs it is time to book
- A flashing check engine light — stop driving and call us; that indicates a misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter
- Rough idle at a stoplight that smooths out once you are moving
- Sweet coolant smell in the cabin or a puddle under the front of the car
- Blue or white smoke from the exhaust after a cold start
- Temperature gauge climbing in slow traffic but normal on the highway
- Noticeably worse fuel economy on the same commute
Every job starts with an inspection and a written estimate. Nothing gets done without your approval — call (705) 748-4223 or drop the vehicle at 485 Parkhill Rd E, Peterborough, Ontario K9L 1C2.
Engine Repair & Tune-Ups — the questions we get asked most
- My check engine light is on but the car drives fine. Can it wait?
- A steady light means log it and get it read soon — many of the codes we pull are emissions faults that quietly cost you fuel and will fail a safety-adjacent inspection. A flashing light is different: that is an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the converter, and continuing to drive can turn a coil replacement into a converter replacement.
- Isn't a code reader enough? The parts store read it for free.
- A code tells you which circuit reported a problem, not what caused it. A P0301 says cylinder one is misfiring — that could be a coil, a plug, an injector, a vacuum leak or a compression problem. We use the code as the starting point and test from there so you buy the part that actually fixes it.
- How often does a modern car need a tune-up?
- Most vehicles built in the last fifteen years want plugs somewhere between 60,000 and 160,000 km depending on plug type, plus filters and fluids on their own schedule. We follow the manufacturer's interval for your specific vehicle rather than a generic mileage number.
- What happens if a timing belt breaks?
- On an interference engine — which is most of them — the valves and pistons collide and the repair bill goes from a scheduled service to an engine rebuild. Timing belts are replaced on time, not on symptoms, because there are no symptoms. If you do not know when yours was last done, ask us to check.
- Why does my car overheat in traffic but not on the highway?
- That pattern points at airflow rather than coolant flow — a failed cooling fan, fan relay or fan clutch. At highway speed the ram air keeps things in range; sitting on George Street downtown, it cannot. Overheating in both conditions points more toward the thermostat, water pump or a blockage.
- Do you work on European engines?
- Yes. We regularly service BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, MINI, Porsche and Land Rover alongside the domestic and Japanese makes, and we have the scan capability those platforms require.
- Is it worth repairing an engine on an older car?
- Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and we will tell you which. If the body and frame are solid and the rest of the driveline is healthy, a head gasket or timing job can be far cheaper than a replacement vehicle. If the rockers are gone from salt, we will say so rather than take the work.
- Can you diagnose an intermittent problem that never happens here?
- Often, yes. Modern engine computers store freeze-frame data that captures conditions at the moment of the fault, and we can leave a recorder on the vehicle for problems that only appear cold, wet, or after twenty minutes of driving.

“They're awesome. After the bs I've been through with other garages and my car, it was a breathe of fresh air with these guys. Anytime no contact drop off, quick workers and chill as well. I'll be going back!”
“The staff at Four Aces was friendly and efficient. They addressed my problems immediately and had me back on the road in good time after checking the vehicle over for any other issues and reporting the results directly to me. Thank you for your continued service and caring in keeping my vehicle in good and safe shape.”
“I have been very pleased with the service I have received at 4 Aces Automotive Centre. They have solved problems that other facilities were not able to do. The pricing seems fair—certainly comparable to other centres. And they seem very friendly, knowledgable, efficient, and skilled. Once, when they had my car up on the hoist—performing a repair— they detected an additional—and serious—problem. Rather than just telling me what they had found, they took me out into the garage to show me the issue and suggested that I have an auto body expert look at the problem to determine if it could be safely resolved before I had 4 Aces proceed with some additional repairs. I trust their work and they seem to genuinely care about the safety of my vehicle.”
