Exhaust System Repair
Exhaust systems in eastern Ontario rarely die of old age — they die of salt. Brine spray works into the seams, the pipe rots from the inside out where condensation collects on short winter trips, and hangers snap after a few thousand freeze-thaw cycles. A system that would last fifteen years in a dry climate can be finished here in seven.
Beyond the noise, a leaking exhaust is a safety issue. A leak ahead of the cabin can push carbon monoxide inside, particularly with the rear defrost and the tailgate creating low pressure at the back of an SUV. We repair section by section where the rest of the system is sound, rather than selling you a complete replacement by default.

What this service covers
- Muffler and resonator replacement
- Flex pipe, pipe section and clamp repair
- Hanger and mount replacement
- Oxygen sensor testing and replacement
- Catalytic converter diagnosis and replacement
- Exhaust leak detection and gasket repair
- Heat shield repair for the rattle nobody can locate
Signs it is time to book
- The car has gotten noticeably louder, especially on acceleration
- A rattle at idle or over bumps that sounds like a can of bolts
- Exhaust fumes noticeable inside the cabin
- A check engine light with a catalyst or oxygen sensor code
- Visible black soot or a hole in the pipe or muffler
- Fuel economy dropping with no other explanation
Every job starts with an inspection and a written estimate. Nothing gets done without your approval — call (705) 748-4223 or drop the vehicle at 485 Parkhill Rd E, Peterborough, Ontario K9L 1C2.
Exhaust System Repair — the questions we get asked most
- Why do exhaust systems rust out so fast here?
- Road salt plus short trips. Water is a combustion byproduct, and if the exhaust never gets hot enough long enough to evaporate it, that water sits in the muffler and rots the system from the inside while the salt attacks the outside. Peterborough winters deliver both conditions at once.
- Can you repair just one section instead of the whole system?
- Yes, and we prefer to when the remainder is sound. We will show you the corroded section and tell you honestly how much life is left in the rest before you decide.
- What is that rattle only at idle?
- Most often a loose heat shield — a cheap fix that many shops overlook. It can also be a broken hanger letting the pipe touch the underbody, or a failing catalytic converter with a collapsed internal substrate.
- Do I really need to replace a catalytic converter?
- If it has failed, yes. It is emissions equipment required by law, and a plugged converter chokes the engine and can cause overheating and power loss. Before quoting one we confirm the converter itself has failed rather than an upstream sensor or a misfire reading as a catalyst fault.
- Is a loud exhaust illegal in Ontario?
- Yes. The Highway Traffic Act requires a muffler in good working order and prohibits excessive noise or smoke. A rotted-out system is both a fine risk and a safety inspection failure.
- Can an exhaust leak make me sick?
- It can. Carbon monoxide has no smell, and a leak ahead of the cabin can draw exhaust in through the firewall or a tailgate seal. Headache or drowsiness while driving is worth investigating immediately.
- How long does exhaust work take?
- Most section repairs are same-day. Heavily corroded fasteners and seized flange bolts add time — in this climate we plan for it.
- Will new exhaust parts rust as fast as the originals?
- Aluminised and stainless components last considerably longer than plain steel, which is what most factory systems use in the rear sections. We will quote the option and let you weigh the cost against how long you plan to keep the vehicle.

“They're awesome. After the bs I've been through with other garages and my car, it was a breathe of fresh air with these guys. Anytime no contact drop off, quick workers and chill as well. I'll be going back!”
“The staff at Four Aces was friendly and efficient. They addressed my problems immediately and had me back on the road in good time after checking the vehicle over for any other issues and reporting the results directly to me. “I have been very pleased with the service I have received at 4 Aces Automotive Centre. They have solved problems that other facilities were not able to do. The pricing seems fair—certainly comparable to other centres. And they seem very friendly, knowledgable, efficient, and skilled. Once, when they had my car up on the hoist—performing a repair— they detected an additional—and serious—problem. Rather than just telling me what they had found, they took me out into the garage to show me the issue and suggested that I have an auto body expert look at the problem to determine if it could be safely resolved before I had 4 Aces proceed with some additional repairs. I trust their work and they seem to genuinely care about the safety of my vehicle.”
