Tires, Wheels & Alignment

Ontario drivers run two sets of tires whether they admit it or not, and Peterborough County is exactly the kind of place where the second set matters. County roads freeze before city streets, the lake-effect band off Rice Lake and Chemong can drop snow on a clear forecast, and a rural driveway in Douro or Ennismore will not be plowed on the same schedule as Charlotte Street.

We fit, balance and store tires, and we align vehicles on equipment that measures camber, caster and toe against the manufacturer's spec rather than eyeballing the steering wheel. Alignment is the cheapest tire insurance there is — a half-degree of toe error will scrub a new set of tires flat in a single season.

Tires, Wheels & Alignment — the questions we get asked most

When should I put winter tires on in Peterborough?
The practical trigger is a sustained daytime temperature at or below 7 °C, which usually lands in the last two weeks of October here. Below that point all-season rubber hardens and loses grip even on dry pavement — the compound matters as much as the snow does. We book heavily in the third week of October, so call ahead.
Are winter tires mandatory in Ontario?
They are not legally required in Ontario the way they are in Quebec, but most Ontario insurers offer a discount for running four matched winter tires. Bring us the invoice — that is usually all your insurer needs.
Can I run just two winter tires on the drive wheels?
We do not recommend it and will tell you why. Two winter tires on the front of a front-drive car gives you grip to accelerate and steer with far less grip to hold the rear, which makes the car spin at exactly the wrong moment. Four matched tires or four all-seasons.
How often does my car need an alignment?
Once a year is a reasonable baseline in this county, plus any time you install new tires, replace a steering or suspension part, or find a pothole hard enough that you remember it. Frost-heave season in March produces a steady stream of alignment work here for good reason.
How long do tires last?
Six years from the date code is the practical limit regardless of tread depth, and many sets wear out before then. Rubber ages — a set of winters with plenty of tread that has been sitting in a shed since 2016 is no longer a winter tire in any meaningful sense.
Can you repair a nail in my tire?
If the puncture is in the tread area, smaller than about 6 mm, and the tire has not been driven flat, yes — a proper patch-plug from the inside. Sidewall and shoulder damage cannot be repaired safely and we will not do it.
Do you handle TPMS sensors?
Yes, including relearn procedures after a changeover. Sensor batteries typically last seven to ten years, and they tend to announce their retirement on the first cold morning of the season.
Do I need to rotate tires if my car has all-wheel drive?
Especially then. AWD systems are sensitive to circumference differences between tires; letting one axle wear significantly faster than the other puts load through the centre differential or transfer case. Rotate every oil change.

I have been very pleased with the service I have received at 4 Aces Automotive Centre. They have solved problems that other facilities were not able to do. The pricing seems fair—certainly comparable to other centres. And they seem very friendly, knowledgable, efficient, and skilled. Once, when they had my car up on the hoist—performing a repair— they detected an additional—and serious—problem. Rather than just telling me what they had found, they took me out into the garage to show me the issue and suggested that I have an auto body expert look at the problem to determine if it could be safely resolved before I had 4 Aces proceed with some additional repairs. I trust their work and they seem to genuinely care about the safety of my vehicle.
