Air conditioning is a sealed system. Unlike fuel or wiper fluid, refrigerant is not consumed — so 'it needs a recharge every summer' is not maintenance, it is a leak that nobody has found yet.
That distinction matters, because a top-up without a leak search buys you a few weeks and vents refrigerant into the atmosphere in the process.
Low refrigerant, which means a leak
This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Systems leak at O-rings, at the condenser after a stone strike, at the compressor shaft seal, or through a corroded line — and on a vehicle that spends winters in road salt, corrosion is a serious contender.
The right diagnosis adds UV dye or uses an electronic sniffer to find the source, repairs it, pulls the system into a deep vacuum to boil out moisture, then recharges by weight to the manufacturer's specification. Guessing at the charge amount causes its own problems: overcharged systems cool poorly and can damage the compressor.
The compressor or its clutch
If the compressor clutch is not engaging, nothing circulates. Sometimes the compressor itself has failed; often the clutch is not being commanded on because a pressure switch, relay or the refrigerant charge is out of range and the system is protecting itself.
A compressor that has failed internally is the expensive scenario, because metal debris travels through the system and the condenser, orifice tube or expansion valve and accumulator usually have to be replaced with it.
Airflow and cooling problems that are not refrigerant at all
Plenty of warm-air complaints turn out to be air problems rather than refrigerant problems.
- A cabin air filter so loaded that airflow through the evaporator collapses
- A condenser packed with bugs, leaves and road grit, unable to shed heat
- A cooling fan that no longer runs at idle — the classic 'cold on the highway, warm at a red light' symptom
- A frozen evaporator caused by moisture and a restricted system
Electrical and blend door faults
On modern vehicles the A/C is managed by a climate control module, and a blend door actuator that has stopped moving will mix in heat regardless of a perfectly healthy refrigerant circuit. A common tell is a clicking sound from behind the dash when you change the temperature setting.
This is where scan data earns its keep: reading actual commanded positions and pressure sensor values separates a mechanical fault from a control fault in minutes.
