The average car battery lasts three to five years, but the spread within that range has less to do with the brand on the label than with how the vehicle is driven and maintained.
None of the following is complicated, and together they routinely add a season or more to a battery's working life.
Six habits that matter
In rough order of how much difference they make:
- Have the battery and charging system tested once a year, ideally in the fall before the first cold snap.
- Keep the terminals clean and tight. Corrosion is resistance, and resistance costs cranking power and strains the alternator.
- Drive long enough to recharge. Aim for at least one 20-30 minute continuous drive a week if your normal routine is short errands.
- Unplug accessories you are not using. Dash cams in parking mode and cheap USB chargers are common parasitic drains.
- Check the hold-down bracket. A battery that vibrates loses plate material and dies early.
- Use a smart maintainer for vehicles that sit — second cars, convertibles and anything stored for weeks at a time.
The season-by-season routine
Fall is the important one: test the battery, alternator and starter draw before you need them. Winter is about keeping the state of charge up — a gentle drive recharges far better than an extended idle. Spring is when a charging-system check catches the damage the cold did. Summer is quietly the hardest season on battery chemistry, because heat accelerates fluid loss and internal ageing, so a voltage check before a long road trip is time well spent.

Getting the type right
