It is a pattern we see every year: the vehicle survives the coldest week of February, then refuses to start in a parking lot in April when it is 12 °C and sunny.
That is not bad luck. It is how lead-acid chemistry behaves, and it is predictable enough that a five-minute test in March would have caught most of them.
Winter damages, spring reveals
At −20 °C a battery delivers roughly half the cranking amps it can produce at room temperature, while the engine it has to turn over is dragging cold, thick oil. Every start in that condition is a deep draw, and short trips around town rarely put back what the starter took out.
A battery that spends months at partial charge sulphates: lead sulphate crystals harden on the plates and permanently reduce capacity. Come spring, the remaining capacity is often just enough for an easy warm start — right up until the morning it is not.
Warning signs worth acting on
None of these means the battery dies tomorrow. All of them mean it is worth ten minutes on a tester.
- A half-second of lazy cranking before the engine catches
- Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev
- Radio presets or clock resetting after a start
- Visible corrosion crusted on the terminals, or a swollen case
- A battery date code more than three years old
A voltage reading is not a test
A multimeter showing 12.5 volts tells you the state of charge, not the state of health. A battery can read fine at rest and collapse the instant it is asked for 400 amps.
A proper conductance or load test measures actual cold-cranking performance against the rating on the label, and it should be paired with an alternator output check. Batteries and charging systems fail as a pair more often than either fails alone — an alternator that undercharges will kill a brand-new battery within a season.
Choosing the right replacement
Cold-cranking amps, reserve capacity, physical group size and battery technology all have to match the vehicle. Anything with automatic start-stop, or a heavy electrical accessory load, generally needs AGM rather than conventional flooded — and some vehicles require the new battery to be registered to the charging module so it is charged on the correct profile.
